Set amidst the harsh landscape of the Upper Palatinate region in Bavaria, the military base at Grafenwöhr is now home to the Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC). Embedded between trees and the beautiful Dickhaeuter Lake, the complex is not only available to US army officers and their families based in Grafenwöhr, it is also a destination for soldiers returning from missions abroad as a place to process their frequently traumatic experiences.

A variety of sport facilities are designed to help visitors relax. This objective and the aim of blending the development into the landscape determine the architecture of the ORC: with exception of the climbing hall, all structural elements are single-storey featuring natural surfaces with the aim of drawing the trees and lake into the buildings via spatial configurations and visual links through floor-to-ceiling windows.

In contrast to the more traditional climbing hall opposite, the main building has an elegant touch. It accommodates a reception area, a small travel agency, a seminar room, offices and bathrooms, large storage areas and a restaurant. The reception hall adopts the welcoming feel of the forecourt and continues the atmosphere indoors.

Separated by a slightly curved street, the private area with holiday apartments and bathroom facilities is positioned to the rear of the delivery zone clad with Corten steel panels. The six apartments are grouped in three blocks. In order to allow some privacy and a direct view out into the woods, the terraces are laid out in a staggered arrangement.

Karlheinz Beer and his team have been successful in creating a modest, but at the same time attractive complex for recreation indoors and outdoors in the middle of nature by making use of subtle measures, traditional shapes and materials, despite being on grounds that are often somewhat disturbing to civilians.
