Die Neubebauung des desolaten Expo-Geländes am Bielerseeufer vor den Toren Nidaus ist das derzeit größte Bauprojekt in und um Biel. Das Hafenquartier AGGLOlac soll eine Fläche von 130.000 Quadratmetern für Wohn- und Gewerbenutzung bereitstellen. Der erste Baustein steht bereits: Die Bootswerft Scheurer am Eingang des AGGLOlac-Areals wurde im Herbst 2013 fertiggestellt.

Die Überbauung ist ein hybrider Baukörper, der eine Werkstatt, Parkplätze, Wohnungen und Reihenhäuser umfasst. Was den Entwurf aber wirklich auszeichnet, ist die Komplexität des Innenraums innerhalb einer homogenen Hülle nach außen hin. Das Gebäude - es sieht wirklich wie ein einziges Gebäude aus - ist in Wirklichkeit ein Konglomerat aus sechs Reihenhäusern, einem Wohnblock mit neun Einheiten, zwei Gewerbeeinheiten und einem Parkdeck. Und an der Basis, sozusagen als metaphysisches Fundament darunter, die Werkstatt des Bootsbauers, die 1900 der insgesamt 4750 Quadratmeter einnimmt.

Das von Goetz Castorph Architekten entworfene Gebäude setzt ein klares Statement. Der kompakte Baukörper, dessen Sockel zwei Blöcke aufnimmt, beschränkt sich in seiner städtebaulichen Ausrichtung durch einen Knick in der Fassade nicht auf eine Dimension. Bewusst als Solitär platziert, fügt sich das Gebäude auf natürliche Weise in seine Umgebung ein und erscheint als neue Landmarke, die sowohl das Ufer der Zihl als auch das Straßenbild der Docteur-Schneider-Straße neu definiert.


The redevelopment of the desolate Expo site on the banks of Lake Biel just outside Nidau is currently the largest construction project in and around Biel. The AGGLOlac waterfront district is destined to provide a floor area of 130,000 square metres for residential and commercial use. The first module is already in place: the Scheurer boat builder’s yard, positioned at the entrance to the AGGLOlac site, was completed in the autumn of 2013.

The development is a hybrid structure incorporating a workshop, car parking, apartments and row houses. What really characterises the design, though, is the complexity of the interior contained within a homogeneous envelope on the outside. The building – it really looks like only one building – is in fact a conglomeration of six terrace houses, an apartment block with nine units, two commercial units and a car parking deck. And at the base, as a kind of metaphysical foundation underneath, the boat builder’s workshop, which takes up 1900 of the total 4750 square metres.

The building designed by Goetz Castorph Architekten makes a clear statement. The compact structure, the plinth of which is a base for two blocks, does not limit its urban alignment to one dimension due to a kink in the facade. Consciously placed as a solitaire, the building blends into its surroundings in a natural way and appears as a new landmark redefining both the banks of the river Zihl and the streetscape of Docteur-Schneider-Strasse.
