The historic town hall “Neues Rathaus” in Landsberg, built in the 18th century, has been upgraded through the extension of a new, representative assembly hall with an adjoining foyer.

Despite the extent of construction work – the hall covers an area of 190 sqm, the foyer 109 sqm – the alterations made to the spatial structure of the old building are minimal. The architects rearranged some of the functions and reopened the central axis as a passage through to the courtyard. The sculptured new building is set into the topography of the courtyard and arranged in a stepped series like a cascading waterfall. In correspondence to the natural incline, the stairways flow underneath the new structural component. The light-coloured exterior paving continues into the foyer merely separated by a single, thin pane of glass.

Dark, precious finishes characterise the dignified atmosphere of the assembly hall with 57 parliamentary seats. The wide concrete steps with 28 black bucket seats for visitors represent a clear contrast. Their staggered arrangement bridges the height  difference between the old building and the new extension.

The double-skin, almost translucent building envelope wraps itself around the whole structure like medieval chain armour. From the inside, the metal membrane is hardly noticeable. Nevertheless, the effect it has as a filter is sufficient for it to be perceived as a spatial boundary. The membrane also functions as a screen to deflect sun rays and glare as well as a measure to prevent falling. A large roof terrace above the assembly hall is particularly appreciated as a place to clink glasses after ceremonies in the historic wedding room.
