Die Universität als Stadt
Die medizinische Fakultät der Johannes-Kepler-Universität (JKU) in Linz ist eine Neugründung, die auf das Jahr 2014 zurückgeht. Sie ist die jüngste medizinische Fakultät des Landes und konzentriert sich in der Forschung auf die Schwerpunkte Altersforschung, Versorgungsforschung und Medizintechnik. Baulich entwickelte sich die Fakultät am Areal des Kepler Universitätsklinikums, welches durch Zusammenschluss des AKH Linz, der Landes-Nervenklinik Wagner-Jauregg sowie der Landes-Frauen- und Kinderklinik entstanden ist. Das wichtigste Erweiterungsgebäude beinhaltet Flächen für die Forschung und Lehre sowie eine Bibliothek und Räume für die Verwaltung. Dem Wettbewerb, der 2015 ausgeschrieben wurde, gab der im selben Jahr neu eingesetzte Rektor der JKU einen Auftrag mit auf den Weg, der nicht selbstverständlich ist: Der Neubau sollte „über reine Funktionalität und Ästhetik weit hinausgehen“ und ein Zeichen dafür setzen, dass die JKU auch „physisch ins Zentrum der Landeshauptstadt Linz rücken“ würde. Gefragt war eine „Heimat, die zusammenführt, was zusammengehört: exzellente Forschung, innovative Lehre und ausgezeichnete Versorgung der Patientinnen und Patienten“.

The university as a city
The Medical Faculty at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz was founded in 2014 as a new centre for research and education. It is the newest medical faculty in Austria and concentrates on research in the fields of ageing, healthcare and medical technology. In terms of construction, the faculty has been developed on the grounds of the Kepler University Clinic, which is an amalgamation of the general hospital AKH Linz, the State Wagner Jauregg Neurological Clinic and Women and Children‘s Hospital. The most important new addition includes areas for research and teaching as well as a library and offices for administrative purposes. The competition was launched in 2015 with a special, slightly unusual request made by the newly appointed rector at JKU: the new building was to “go far beyond the average levels of functionality and aesthetics” and make a clear statement, which would allow JKU to also “physically move into the centre of the state capital Linz.” The demand was for “a home that brings together what belongs together: excellent research, innovative teaching methods as well as outstanding patient care.”
