Das Internationale Haus in Schwabing, ein Wohnheim für Studenten aus dem In- und Ausland, war der erste Block, der 1956 an der Agnesstraße fertiggestellt wurde. In den folgenden Jahren kamen mehrere weitere Studentenhäuser hinzu, allerdings nicht als Randbebauung, wie die historischen Pendants in der Nachbarschaft, sondern als schräg auf das Grundstück gesetzte Solitärbauten. Der bauliche Zustand der Gebäude nach einer Nutzungsdauer von 50 Jahren und die heutigen komplexeren Anforderungen machten es notwendig, die Zukunft der studentischen Wohnanlage zu überdenken.   

Aus dem 2011 ausgelobten städtebaulichen Wettbewerb ging das Berliner Architekturbüro Geier Maass als Sieger hervor. Sie entfernten das alte International House mit dem Flachdachgebäude an der Ecke Agnes-/Adelheidstraße und ersetzten es durch einen sechsgeschossigen U-förmigen Block, der nun seit Dezember 2014 bezogen ist. Zusammen mit dem anderen sechsgeschossigen Neubau in der Mitte des Grundstücks, der Ende 2016 fertiggestellt wurde, setzt er den Stil der umliegenden historischen Gebäude in Bezug auf Materialwahl, Höhe und Fassadengestaltung fort. Die Fassaden spiegeln die Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Wohnungsgrößen und -typen wider, die entsprechend den Ansprüchen der heutigen Studenten angeordnet wurden. Die Außenzonen in der Mitte des Blocks bieten die Möglichkeit, verschiedene Aktivitäten durchzuführen. Insgesamt schafft der Gebäudekomplex ein helles und offenes Gefühl und erinnert dennoch an ein halbes Jahrhundert Baugeschichte.


The International House in Schwabing, a hall of residence for students from Germany and abroad, was the first block to be completed at Agnesstraße in 1956. Several further student buildings were added over the following years, not as boundary developments though, like the historical counterparts in the neighbourhood, but as solitary buildings set at an angle on the plot. The structural condition of the buildings after a service life of 50 years and today’s more complex requirements have made it necessary to rethink the future of the students’ residential estate.   

The Berlin-based architects‘ practice Geier Maass came out winner of the urban design and development competition initiated in 2011. They removed the old International House with the flat-roof building at the corner of Agnes-/Adelheidstraße and replaced it by a six-storey U-shaped block, which has now been occupied since December 2014. Together with the other six-storey new build in the centre of the plot, which was completed at the end of 2016, it continues the style of the surrounding historical buildings in terms of material selection, height and facade design. The elevations reflect the multitude of different apartment sizes and types that have been arranged to correspond with the demands of today’s students. The exterior zones in the centre of the block provide the opportunity to perform a variety of activities. All in all, the cluster of buildings creates a light and open feel whilst still being a reminder of half a century of building history.
