After years of abandonment the Upper Bavarian Parish Maitenbeth was able to purchase the listed former post office building, Alte Post, and give the village square and the building a new lease of life. In the context of an urban development promotion programme, it has now become a central meeting place accommodating a community hall, offices and historic exhibitions. The recently completed town hall is the most distinguished element in the comprehensive redevelopment to a barrier-free village centre.

With its deep overhanging roof, the street-facing side of the town hall bears a certain resemblance to a barn, carefully adopting the eave of the Alte Post and directing the visitor’s view towards the historical building rather than itself. Due to the topography of the site, there is an upper and lower entrance to the town hall. All of the hall’s four glazed double doors open outwards ensuring a continuous flow of space between the interior and exterior.

The architects used a few simple means to create offices with a very specific, local vernacular atmosphere. Despite modern office equipment and state-of-the-art LED lighting: the rooms obtain their characteristic features by providing framed views through windows looking out at the old wooden barns, blossoming fruit trees and lush green meadows.

The result is a symbiotic relationship between traditional and contemporary architecture and a new centre featuring everything that an Upper Bavarian village square could possibly need.
